circuit training

Over the break Kelly and I started doing some "circuit" training sessions for overall fitness. Basically the idea is that we come up with 6 or 7 different exercises that focus on different areas of the body and spend a couple of minutes on each one, then move on to the next. Depending on the exercise anything up to 2 minutes is usually plenty of time to "feel it" and after going round all of the exercises a couple of times everything starts to get a LOT harder.

We have been trying to throw in a whole mix of exercises to not focus on any one area in particular. Some of the things we've been doing:

Skipping
sit up with medicine ball (throwing)
burpees
turning/round kicks on bags (45 seconds speed kicks - 15 seconds full power)
relatively light bench press
step ups on a chair
jumping (over kick bags)
a couple of different weight exercises

There's a few others that I can't think of right now....

Has/does anybody else do anything like this regularly and do you have any other suggestions for exercises?

I think I'm going to take your suggestions you have there and try and work it into my routine as well.

Sorry, I'm too amateur to offer any other suggestions. :)

What does your routine involve already? How regularly are you doing it?

Well right now outside of Hapkido the only training I do is walking.
When I'm at work I'll walk about 5 kms a day, I might break into a bit of jog every now and then.

I used to do stuff like this when I worked at St Leonards.

A colleague and I used to do it before work - we'd go jogging for, I guess it was about 4-5km down through the creek area (bush tracks), then we'd go back to the oval at St Leonards and do some circuit work there.

Our circuits were things like:
- pushups
- hover
- situps, but instead of throwing the ball at the end, it was punching some focus pads that the other person held
- chinups (there were/are some chinup bars there)
- skipping
- short sprints followed by speed punching at the end, then back to the start, again, sprint a bit further, punching, back to the start, etc.
- burpies

I think that's about it.

It was great fun, got really fit doing that stuff 3 times a week.

I enjoyed the circuit work more than the running, but she used to run marathons and half marathons so she liked the running :)

From what I've experienced so far it feels like it is a good way to get a really thorough "work-out" in a relatively short amount of time - definitely enjoyable too.

We've picked up a few more exercises from various places across the web for core strength and other areas. They're kinda hard to describe but some of them are really tough.

A good way to do this type of training is to use a "density" approach. For example set a circuit and do 8reps a each station for 10mins. How many sets did you get thru? try to better it each time. Also the circuit could be divided by movement...push, pull, hip dom, knee dom, core, explosive......

We are new to the whole circuit thing and there seems to be many opinions on how long and what to do. We just started by trying to see how many times we could do each thing for one minute or if we found one minute too easy then 2 minutes. doing it in a partnership definately makes it more enjoyable..

I had to add this website as it provides some great circuit workouts, as well as others. Keep your eye on the game..

I actually got this off another MA website, so no snickering...
Try the 'Beast Workout', and tell me you haven't done some work.
