Contact - I have had friends who had practiced non contact Martial Arts and they were only to keen to get into fights only to find that when you get hit it hurts! What tournament events do you enter and why? Most times nowadays when I compete I choose the Kata events - especially weapons - I find Kata is the perfect way to focus one's mind and under Tournament conditions this becomes a major factor - on occasions i have wanted to spar but have been declined due to health issues What de-motivates you?getting old and being overweight - these things cannot be avoided BUT when you have young ones who have yet to experience these things it can be demotivating to train. Tell us about a technique you wish you could domaintaining calm at all times and not reverting to violence at the first opportunity What got you into martial arts?My son's desire to be a ninja turtle and my desire that he not be! What is the hardest part of your training? At the moment - Kiba dach is a killer for my hips and back! What would make you quit martial arts altogether?Politics aside I'd say age and ignorance from others who refuse to accept that everyone has a point of view and a part to play in Martial Arts. What technique can't you go without using?A really hard technique called "Not being where the danger is" - not always easy but really a necessary one! What weapon would you like to master?katana! when I was training I always used kata as a way of calming my mind and performing Katana Kata was an extension of this - it sounds lame but you really must become one with the sword! What was your greatest martial arts achievement in the past year?returning to Tournaments - as a spectator though - longgggg story but it was great to be back! Why did you first take up your particular style?Originally as a child I trained in Judo but we moved and there was no club in the new area so I let it slide - but that choice was my parents - later I tried TKD but I wasn't really into jumping - eventually my son wanted to learn about Martial arts so I took him to Zen Bu Kan and eventually l followed - it is a style that teaches more than punches and kicks and focuses on realistic self defence. Who have you learned the most from as a martial artist?I'd have to say that it is not a choice of anyone person - Dr Les Harnos, Kyoshi Sama Aniko, Kyoshi Rob and even my son Sensei Chris come to mind as do Kyoshi Micheal Jamieson and Master Davis Massey - all of these people have influenced me in Martial Arts and each of these Martial Artists have vastly different attitudes and beliefs towards life and have given me a lot to think about! What is the next goal you are aiming to achieve?the next goal I have is to shake of my lethargy and self doubt and get back into training and loose some weight - getting old and this will be my last shot at improving myself. |
